Indo-Pacific Sailfish
(Istiophorus platypterus)

The original watercolor painting was commissioned by staff of the Monterey Bay Aquarium as a gift for the Director of Aquamarine Fukushima, a prominent public aquarium in Japan that was later damaged by the 2011 tsunami and subsequently reopened. Sailfish are stunningly beautiful, and it was pure pleasure to study their anatomy and the variety of colors they display depending on their mood and activity level. The original image is a small, tightly rendered combination of watercolor dry-brush and wash techniques, and just over 10″ long. It had to be small because there was exactly one week to complete the commission, including research, sketching, and final painting. That was fun!
