Magellanic Penguin,
Spheniscus magellanicus

This handsome fellow was snoozing upright in the sun at Punta Tombo penguin rookery near Peninsula Valdez, Argentina, when I stopped by with my sketchbook. He dozed peacefully and didn’t mind me sitting there drawing him. Nearby the rocky bluffs dropped down to a gravelly beach where other Magellanic Penguins were coming and going and contemplating the water. All around us fluffy chicks peered out from burrows and excavated nests under the roots of scrubby bushes. White streaks of guano radiated from every nest, and curious eco-tourists wandered carefully along penguin trails. I finished up the drawing back in my cabin aboard the visiting ship where I was the onboard naturalist once we set sail for the farther reaches of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego.
