Killer Whale
Orcinus orca
Killer Whales, sometimes called orcas, are the top predator in the oceans and the largest member of the dolphin family. They live worldwide from the poles to the tropics, near the coasts and far offshore. Several different ecotypes have been identified that specialize in different foods, such as salmon, sharks, or marine mammals. The original image is a black and white, pen and ink illustration on scratchboard, commisioned as part of a series for the book “Between Species” about the human-dolphin connection. Color was later added in Photoshop. There are three other images in this series: Beluga, Bottlenose Dolphin, and Dall’s Porpoise.
