Gray Whale Mother and Calf
Eschrictius robustus

Gray Whales migrate the length of North America, from their summer home in the Bering Sea to breeding bays on the western coast of Baja California where they spend several weeks in the winter. Grays are extinct in the Atlantic Ocean due to hundreds of years of human hunting, but in the Pacific they have made a mighty recovery back to near their historical population. Every winter they pass close along the California coast as they migrate south and then north again, delighting and impressing whale watchers on the seashore and on boat tours. They are even more impressive in their favorite Baja lagoons, where trusting mothers bring their new calves right up to small boats to be petted. Kate has led hundreds of day trips to see Gray Whales on Monterey Bay in California, and has joined Baja Discovery as a naturalist at their winter whale-watching camp on beautiful Laguna San Ignacio, in Baja California. This image is a colored pencil drawing. The pencils were kept very sharp and were applied in many gradual layers.
