Breaching Humpback Whale in Monterey Bay
(Megaptera novaeangliae)
Humpback Whales live in all the world’s oceans and spend most of their time close to shore, where they are easily seen and studied by humans. These are the whales famous for singing beautiful songs and for frequently breaching high into the air. In Monterey Bay, Humpacks and their cousins, the great Blue Whales, gather to feed during the long summer before migrating to Central America in the winter for mating and birthing calves. Kate Spencer has worked many seasons as a naturalist on Monterey Bay Whale Watch tours among the Humpbacks, and has also studied them in Southeast Alaska as a Research Associate with the Alaska Whale Foundation. This image is a digital painting, created in Photoshop using a Wacom Tablet, in the style of a multi-color wood engraving or pen and ink on scratchboard with painted color.
