“Boulder Canyon Swallows”
Swallows Flying in the Gorge of Boulder Creek, near Boulder, Colorado

 The highway follows Boulder Creek up its rocky gorge toward its source in the High Country west of the town of Boulder. Driving up for a day of painting in the mountains, I was drawn by the dramatic cliffs to a gravelly pull-off along the tumbling creek. Light bathed one rock wall and the other was in stark shadow while scores of swallows flitted and arced in and out of illumination. A very happy hour enchanted by the reflections within the cliff wall shadows led to this sweet little watercolor sketch.
